Using NLP and New Habits to learn ESL Faster

NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
ESL stands for English as a Second Language.

NLP is a grass roots group that began in the early 1970′s when college students  in Santa Cruz, CA set out to discover the structure of subjective experience. This group experimented with a unique way of approaching how the mind works. The NLP models that resulted from exploring subjectivity are contributions to the field of psychology.

To learn to solve problems, NLP students didn’t study those who had the problems to learn about what went wrong. NLP'ers studied those who had the problems and resolved them. This process is called modeling.  NLP'ers systematically deconstructed the mental and behavioral strategies that lead to success and taught those strategies to those who wished to change themselves. Modeling has been turned into a popular concept and used by many current personal development coaches and teachers.

Can ESL students copy the strategies of previous ESL students?

Yes of course they can.

Now to create new  habits that enable successful ESL Learning

BJ Fogg, PhD - Director, Persuasive Tech Lab Stanford University says "I’ve studied human behavior for 20 years, mostly at Stanford University. Here’s what I’ve learned: Only three things will change behavior in the long term".

1. Have an epiphany - difficult unless you have mystical powers
2. Change your environment
3. Take baby steps as few winning programs exist

It is also  important to avoid the top 10 mistakes :

1. Relying on willpower for long-term change.
2. Attempting big leaps instead of baby steps.
3. Ignoring how environment shapes your behavior.
4. Trying to stop old behaviors instead of creating new ones.
5. Blaming failures on lack of motivation.
6. Underestimating the power of triggers.
7. Believing that information leads to action.
8. Focusing on abstract goals instead of concrete behaviors.
9. Seeking to change a behavior forever, not for a short time.
10. Assuming that behavior change is difficult.

Can ESL students be taught new habits to learn and practice the English Language ?

Yes of course they can.

The ESL in Canada 1 - 2 step is to use modeling to create new behaviours and create new habits to use them consistently.
