Antigonish Culture & Heritage

The Antigonish Highland Society sponsors the Antigonish Highland Games. The Highland Games events include foot races, piping, the Highland Fling, and traditional Scottish heavy events, hurdle races, archery, and the Reel and Sword dances.

The Festival Antigonish Summer Theatre offers over 100 performances of a dozen different shows over 2 months.

The St. FX Art Gallery, established in 1976, provides a space for aspiring Nova Scotian artists to exhibit their work.

History of Human Settlement in Antigonish

Antigonish has an interesting history of settlement.

Mi'kmaqs the Algonkian speaking members who originally occupied this territory were called 'Miggumahgee', or the country of the Mi'kmaq.

Starting in 1755 the Acadian French began to settle the east end of Antigonish County. Acadians populated the counties Pomquet, Tracadie, and Havre Boucher.

During the 1770's thousands of Scots were forced to flee during the Highland Clearance in West Scotland and many settled along the Northeastern coast of Nova Scotia.

In 1784 Irish Loyalists, led by Captain Timothy Hierlihy took up a large land grant surrounding Antigonish Harbour and founded Antigonish.

Free black citizens entered Nova Scotia after the American Revolution, settling in Tracadie, Antigonish County.
