Preparing to Teach ESP in the Real World

Thursday, June 3, 2010 - 10:00 am –11:30 am Eastern Daylight Time in the United States

Playback version
(2:00 pm–3:30 pm, June 3, 2010 GMT)

English language teachers are often asked to teach English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses in call centers and in multilingual workplaces, such as resorts or factories run by international corporations. Because few teachers have had specific coursework or training in workplace ESP, this seminar will focus on the needs of both in-service and future ESP trainers.

Using short case studies, participants will learn how they can prepare themselves to deliver appropriate courses that reflect the needs of all stakeholders.

This method will let us spend much of the seminar focusing on finding and using learning and training resources for ESP trainers. We will also carefully explore how ESP trainers can determine what they need to do, find or design appropriate materials, and assess the effectiveness of their work.

To conclude, we will discuss not only the linguistic issues of workplace ESP but also the cultural and psychological challenges both trainers and trainees can face.
